Natural Deodorant That Really Works! Really.
If you’re here, you might be on the hunt for a new deodorant. Or you just really love Akt. But if it’s the former, let’s talk about why our Deodorant Balms actually work, so you can feel confident before making the switch.
First, forget what you’ve heard
Let’s be honest. Natural deodorant doesn’t have the best reputation. You may have even heard about people getting strange reactions or struggling with a “transition period” (sidenote: it’s not very common, but we’ll be posting about it soon). Some people have also had bad experiences that left them feeling smelly, sweaty or worse. So why on earth would anyone bother with going natural if their current product works just fine?
A choice you can feel good about
Before we launched Akt, we didn’t think too much about what we were putting on our pits. The stuff we were using worked okay (not great) and smelled, fine-ish (read: eau de teenage boy), but once we realized we could have an infinitely better experience - we never looked back. We couldn’t wait to completely change people’s relationship with their deodorant.
What about the health risks everyone talks about?
We’d be remiss not to discuss the many claims floating around that deodorant can cause cancer and other long-term health problems. Whilst most studies have been inconclusive, we’re certainly not doctors and have no business giving you medical advice. It’s always best to consult your GP on specific health matters.
What we can be sure of, is that our Deodorant Balms are free from other “nasties” found in many standard formulas. When we set out to create a better deodorant, we weren’t trying to cure any serious health issues. We simply wanted to feel better about what we were putting on our skin, especially when we found out how sensitive your underarms are.
What’s a lymph node and why does it matter?
It turns out, your underarms are full of lymph nodes. This means they’re a major part of your body’s overall lymphatic system, which acts like a filtration system for toxins that have entered your body.
If you’ve ever had a sore throat, you may have noticed some swelling under your neck and around your throat. That might have been your lymph nodes fighting off an infection - making them larger and a bit painful to the touch.
Why the mini science lesson? Well, this whole lymph node situation means the often neglected skin in your armpits is actually really sensitive! And should be treated as such.
After learning this, we felt that coating our sensitive underarm skin with a ton of chemicals or relying on deodorant to stop sweating entirely seemed kind of unnatural.
Armpits need love too
To keep things simple, we think of our deodorant as just another part of our skincare routine. Would you put something on your face that was packed with chemicals? What about under your armpits? We like to say that if you wouldn’t put it on your face, why put it on your pits.
If you’ve never looked closely at the ingredients in your “normal” non-natural deodorant, then you might not know it’s often made with things like propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, parabens, aluminium, and triclosan (to name a few).
If we don’t know what any of those things are, is it really safe to slather them all over our skin every morning?
Good for you, good for the planet
We don’t want to sound all doom and gloom, so let’s get to some good stuff now. Akt isn’t just better for you personally, it’s also much better for the planet.
We’re a zero waste deodorant, which means that we’re committed to being responsible when producing it.
All of our products are completely plastic free, and our packaging is 100% recyclable. We don’t use tape on things like our shipping boxes, and while it’d be far easier for us to use plastic for things like the caps, tube liners, cap seals and more, we’d prefer to spend more time and effort protecting the planet than simply selling more deodorant that’s full of plastic.
A choice you can feel confident about
We promise we’re not here to scare you. We’re definitely not doctors (we’ve never even played them on stage!). Akt was simply born out of our desire to feel better about what we were putting on our bodies, especially once we learned that armpits are actually pretty sensitive.
Put simply, our natural, zero waste deodorant is a better choice for people and the planet. Plus, it’s a product that’s made for everyone. Instead of marketing ourselves as the “best” deodorant for women or a “super-effective extra-strength” antiperspirant for men, we’re proud to be a product for all genders, skin types and bodies. While we’re not curing any major health issues, we can give you peace of mind that what you’re putting on your skin is safe and more sustainable - plus it actually works!
